SaneBox alternatives

SaneBox works inside the mail app you already use. If you want to change the app, or skip a subscription, here is what else to look at.

The short version

  • SaneBox suits people who like their current email client and want a quieter inbox around it.
  • People look elsewhere for a full app, for drafting help, or because their provider already has free filters.
  • Otto, Spark and the built-in Gmail and Outlook tools each take a different route to a calmer inbox.

Who SaneBox suits

SaneBox does not replace your mail app. Its home page says it works with every email client and lists features such as filtering unimportant mail, BlackHole for senders you never want to see, a Daily Digest of unopened low-priority mail, reminders when someone does not reply, and snooze. It states that it looks at the basics such as sender, subject line and date, and does not store full emails or attachments.

If you are happy in your current client and want it calmer, that independence is the point.

Why people look elsewhere

  • You want to change the app, not just tidy it. A filtering layer leaves reading, replying and scheduling to your client.
  • You want help writing and acting. SaneBox's listed features are about sorting, digests, reminders and snooze rather than drafting replies.
  • Your provider already has free tools. Gmail filters and Outlook rules can do part of the same job at no extra cost, though they take more setup.

Alternatives worth a look

  • Otto. A full app for Gmail and Outlook with calendar, tasks and an assistant that waits for your approval. Its labels, saved views, filters and rules quiet mail inside Otto. Free covers one account; Plus is $6.99 a month and Pro is $19.99 a month, with a lower rate on yearly billing.
  • Gmail filters or Outlook rules. Google's filter guide covers labelling, archiving, starring and forwarding by search criteria. Outlook.com and Microsoft 365 accounts also have Sweep, which Microsoft says is not available for Gmail or other IMAP accounts.
  • Spark. A client whose Free plan lists a Smart Inbox and unlimited accounts.

What they cost

Otto Free costs nothing. These are the lowest paid plans, in USD on monthly billing, from each vendor's own pricing page.

ProductLowest paid planPriceNotes
OttoPlusfrom $6.99/monthPro $19.99/month; $55.99/year for Plus
SaneBoxSnackfrom $3.49/monthfiltering for your current mail app, $2.42/month billed yearly
SparkPlusfrom $10/monthper seat, $8.25/month billed yearly

Yearly billing is cheaper where a vendor offers it, and plan limits differ, so read the plan before you compare on price alone.

Where Otto fits, and where it does not

Otto fits if you want one app for mail, calendar and tasks and are willing to move your daily triage into it. Your mail stays with Gmail or Outlook, so nothing is trapped.

Otto does not fit if you want to keep your current mail client and only add a filter. Otto's rules and filters act inside Otto, so they do not change what another app shows. SaneBox is built for that case.

Side by side: Otto vs SaneBox.

What to test before you switch

Because SaneBox sits behind your client, switching is less about learning a new app and more about whether you want one. Try your replacement on a quiet week and compare three things: how much mail still reaches the main inbox, whether anything important gets filed away, and how easy it is to fix a mistake. A tool that sorts well but hides a client's email once is not worth the saving, so check how to find and undo decisions before you rely on it.

How we checked this

Last reviewed 9 October 2026. Sources: SaneBox's home page, Google's filter guide, Microsoft's Sweep guide and Spark's pricing page. SaneBox's pricing page did not show plan prices without scripts when we read it, so we give none. Otto is our product, so weigh the Otto notes accordingly. Nothing here is paid placement and there are no affiliate links. We read each product's own pages on 9 October 2026 and did not run a head-to-head test. Plans, limits and features change, so confirm on the linked pages before you pay.

Questions, answered

Do I have to change email apps to use SaneBox?

No. SaneBox says it works with every email client. Otto is a separate app for mail, calendar and tasks that connects to your Gmail or Outlook account.

Are there free alternatives to SaneBox?

Gmail filters and Outlook rules are free and cover part of the same ground with more setup. Otto Free and Spark's Free plan also include ways to organize mail.

Can Otto replace SaneBox's digest?

Otto can send a recurring digest of what came in on a schedule you set. It runs inside Otto rather than changing what another mail app shows.
