Fantastical and Otto Mail both show your Google or Microsoft calendar and a task list, but Fantastical isn't an email client. Fantastical is a calendar and tasks app for Apple devices and Windows, with scheduling features such as Openings and Proposals. Otto is a mail app with a calendar and tasks, on your existing Gmail or Outlook account. Its assistant drafts and books, and files too, for your approval.
Otto is ours, so weigh our side. For the better standalone calendar, Fantastical is hard to beat. For a Fantastical alternative that puts the inbox in the same app, that's Otto.
Where Fantastical is stronger
Fantastical's product page describes tasks with due-date notifications that carry over when overdue. For scheduling there's Openings (share your availability), Proposals (offer several times) and RSVP. It works with Google, Microsoft 365, Exchange, iCloud and CalDAV accounts. Its pricing page lists a Free plan with a basic calendar, and Premium features such as push sync. Otto's calendar is simpler, and we won't pretend otherwise.
Where Otto fits
With Fantastical, mail stays in another app. You can forward an event-related email to Fantastical and its AI will extract the details into an event, which is a Premium feature. In Otto you stay in the thread. Ask for a slot and Otto proposes the event on your Google Calendar or Outlook calendar, with the attendees filled in. You approve the card before it's booked. Tasks sync with Google Tasks or Microsoft To Do. See how Otto's assistant works.
Price and fit
Fantastical has a Free plan. It also has paid plans for individuals and families, and for teams, with 14-day trials. Its pricing page shows amounts at checkout rather than on the page, so we're giving none. Otto Free covers one connected account with core mail plus calendar and tasks. Plus is $6.99 a month and Pro is $19.99/month.
